I never confirmed it fixed issues for me, after a while I figured that it didn't work but I never bothered to post it here. But thanks for the hint, yes, the DLL was actually unexpanded.

You can expand it really quick in the cmd box with > EXPAND DLLNAME.dl_ NEWDLLNAME.dll
Now the issues with flickering are gone, game also feels smoother.
However I would love to know a way to actually confirm that the current hl.exe is using the new dll via a console command or something, so if you know please do tell.

6670 here, upgraded from nvidia 8600. cannot play some maps at all, hera for example, when the lights are welded.
you can easily see what dll is loaded using ProcessExplorer - it will show in lower pane path to each dll.

All I gotta say is I'm glad I bought NVIDIA.

I don't think you can see when the dll is just loaded inside the HL engine, but I'll give it a try.

It's a vid card from asus and i use asus drivers and asus gamer osd (to tweak gamma)
maybe i should try non-asus drivers...

installed latest ati drivers.

That dll (atkogl32.dll) is still loaded in NS. I removed it from the windows folder - NS refuses to load in open GL mode.
When i uninstalled Asus OSD - the DLL is gone. but now i cannot adjust gamma and brightness, like i could with asus osd.

This thread is relevant to my interests. About 6 months ago I got an ATI card (had Nvidia before) and ever since then when I play old OpenGL games, they crash after a few minutes. If I switch rendering to DirectX all is well.

Still haven't found a solution. Only drawback is I can't run 1920x1200, I'm stuck with 1920x1080.
