Yeah, like the topic says, I'm having big FPS problems. Basically, when there's a lot going on at the same time on my screen, my FPS drops from 125 to 50-70. I've tried reinstalling drivers, both old and new (clean uninstalls and installs), checking background apps, turning off antivirus software, and changing hl.exe priority and affinity. Vsync is, and has always been, off.
Running WinXP SP3, system:
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6300
GFX: GeForce 8800GTS 640MB
RAM: 2GB DDR2
SFX: Creative X-Fi Elite Pro
System is getting pretty weak by todays standards, but I can't imagine it would have any problems with NS. I mean, I got stable 100+ FPS even on my old comp like three years ago.
Any ideas?

I get similar problems also with a geforce (but a series 6), most noticable on maps like hera and metal. Were some bullshitjargon extra frilly things I turned off that seemed to help since I doubt they were needed in a game that old :P
Could be a sound thing though, not really techincal as yall know so sorry I couldnt be more help :P

Not dualscreening, for those who have asked. Even unplugged the second monitor I had attached (my TV).
Really, would that make a difference frG?

It would actually run worse, I'm fairly sure...
Windows XP is, by what I know and logic, the best OS for an old game such as NS. :\

Considering what you've said during matches and the priv channel the only idea I've got left is to formatt.
I had similar problems until I noticed that my CPU didn't run at full capacity.
NS FPS are more about CPU power than one might think.
I still have to run at fps_max 76 (but at least it's steady now), because my CPU is shit, so I don't know how that applies to your situation. Maybe some Core2 Duo issues in general, or related to XP, or to CPU Bios options!?
NS runs better von Vista than on w7 for me (9600gt)
i got rid or my fps-lags and got the 100 finally by:
copy openGL32.dll from System32 directory into half-life/gldrv und and use the following drvmap.txt:
Code:
Default Default
gldrv/opengl32.dll OpenGL Driver
maybe helps for you

More likely DX10 cards problems than anything else. In my experience 8800/9800/gts250 cards aren't NS friendly, dunno about those GTX 260/275/28x.. I got 8800gts 320 and 8800gt also NSN got 8800gt and same problems (problems were intesive fights and scoreboard fps cut).
Also Atis dx10/11 cards have problems on dynamics lights like flaslight and PG lights (could be solved by r_dynamic_0, but consistency will use 1. For me Atis were far better than nvidia DX10 cards
Put you fps_max 999 and check your score board how much fps you lose, I bet it will cut it to half.
Overclocking the CPU will also help.
My system were on that time:
XP and vista x64(were bad at start, but later got no problems)
Core 2 e6400 3.2ghz
1900xt 512,8800gts 320,2900pro, 8800GT, 3870 & 4850 (best was 1900xt and didnt have any lag or fps issues, dunno about now days drivers..)

It has to do with the HDD. It happens to me when I have the computer full of shit. Movies, music, tv shows... Fragmented stuff, shitloads of garbage in the registry...
The cleaner the computer is, the better. Still, try to overclock that CPU a little, like 300-400Mhz and you'll see the difference, noticeably.

Welcome to the club Fana, getting stable fps in NS is a science, even on new PCs. There are a few things you can do to minimize frame loss, but unless you're very lucky you have little chance of achieving solid fps.
My advice would be to stick with XP, Vista and 7 take up much more system resources and with 2gb of ram youd be cutting it in half.

I have very old pcw so I have to use bad graphics etc to get 100 fps and with little spore and skulk it drops down to 60 and PG in base is like 30. My point is that in order to make it work well I have to remove all backgrounds programs ( I use enditall ) I have noticed that leaving ENSL site or winamp in the background makes the game fps drop for split second thus interruption aiming or blinking if it is timed correctly.
My newest problem is that it occasionally loads some shit ( I have no idea what it is [ its not in the .exe files currectly running ] ) thus making fps 10 for 5-7 seconds. I have yet found fix for this but I will post if I find it.
As for raising fps, developer takes a shitload of power and it may a reason for sudden fps changes. picmip is good for raising fps aswell at the cost of crosshair going blurry, if someone here was able to make very high res crosshairs I would like to try if the blurryness could be fixed by that.

Running WinXP SP3, system:
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6300 @ 1,88 GhZ
GFX: GeForce 8600GT 256MB
RAM: 1GB DDR2
I am playing with 125 FPS @ 1920 x 1080.
My FPS dont drop at all. I can even say that they are very stable.
Ofc. there are situations in which they drop down to 80 fps LIKE IF I AM ON ABLE OR NST AND THERE ARE 26 GUYS IN THE RR. :D
Else its working fine, very goooood!
I would not overclock your CPU. This is not your problem. You should work on your problem instead of searching solutions how to OVERPOWER the problem without even knowing whats your problem.

System:
Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 3.2 GHz
ATI 5750
Running Win 7 I cannt get stable fps while seeing a PG or using flashlight.
Running XP I can get stable 125.
Seems ATI driver is bugged in Win 7 or i read that certain old graphic functions are calculated by software which used to be hardware accelerated in XP.

use a self created link to NS (hl.exe -game ns) and dont use the one that is in the after install list
lower steam priority after NS has launched
let NS prio be normal
turn off a lot of crap windows services (help, auto update, remote registry, themes, error report, restoration, etc...)
no moar idea

Tremendously is 65ºC he told me before. Is not that big deal of a temperature, but it could go lower and you could OC a little bit, as I told you.
The problem is, my pc kinda handled 200fps on a Phenom II 545 and a 8800GTS most of the time, now I'm fucked up with an ATi 4770 which fps drops (from 125 to 90 really quick all the time) in ns_metal in an empty room like flight control or nearby cooling.
So I'd say is a driver issue?

I got ATI 4870, check rest from my profile.
In most maps, I got stable 120fps but in like ns_metal I get fps drops. :(
I have a theory that the only reason people 'improved' on average is because the average user's computer got better.

I used to dual boot XP and Vista for NS, but once I switched over to Win7 I didn't notice a difference so I stuck with that. Years ago I used to get good FPS on an AMD 3000+ XP and like a GeForce 6800, but now like dynamic lighting and lots of structures just murders my FPS. There's a variety of reasons for lower FPS ranging from newer hardware/drivers doesn't support HL as well as it used to, HL can't take advantage of multi-core CPUs, Vista+ has less support for OpenGL, Steam blows, etc.
BendOr's tweak is obsolete and has been for years.

Possibly but you forgot that combat has most likely improved people's fading and otherwise skills quite a bit.
Nade, r_dynamic works pretty well for me aswell. I wonder if that's a server-side enforcement (and how to disable it).
